Rhino Products are proudly supporting rhino conservation in South Africa

Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary

Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary in South Africa is the largest orphaned rhino sanctuary in the world. Founded in 2011 by Petronel Nieuwoudt, Care for Wild specialises in the rescue, rehabilitation, rewilding, release, and ongoing protection of black and white rhinos. By establishing viable and protected breeding populations, they ensure this keystone species has a future.

Care for Wild puts people at the heart of conservation. They empower local communities to find sustainable solutions to socioeconomic issues enabling a safe and peaceful future for the rhinos and children of South Africa.

Where we come in

As part of our new KammRack Black launch, we are proudly working in partnership with Care for Wild, with a percentage of KammRack Black sales being donated to the charity.

Rescue

Time is of the essence. Orphaned or injured calves are flown by helicopter or driven in the transportation crate to the Care for Wild Intensive Care Unit. A highly trained and dedicated team supported by experienced veterinarians work round the clock to stabilise the calf and treat wounds / injuries.

Rehabilitation

The rehabilitation phase involves the treatment and care of orphaned, sick or injured wild rhinos as they are prepared for rewilding, and a successful release back into their natural ecosystems. The Care for Wild purpose-built facilities safely house the rhinos and their specialised team support the animals’ needs during this complex phase.

Rewilding & Release

Successful rewilding occurs through the active reintroduction of healthy rhinos back into healthy ecosystems. Rhinos are released into protected areas where they can adopt natural behaviours and establish breeding populations. 2022 saw the first calf born to two orphans of poaching.

Protection

Protection of the rhinos has led to the conservation of an entire ecosystem. A multilayered protection strategy includes an extensive criminal intelligence network, electric fences, gated access, 24/7 guards and patrols, a Mounted and K9 unit, as well as the integration of AI-enabled cameras and tracking collars.

Community

Care for Wild community projects support youth employment; economic development; food security and improved nutrition for children and adults; training and skills development; as well as creating opportunities for communities to fulfil their responsibilities as custodians of the environment.

Sustainability

Care for Wild forms part of the 28 000 ha Barberton Nature Reserve. The reserve, together with surrounding areas, is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Care for Wild is a registered member of IUCN and operates many projects and initiatives in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
